FA7, born in 1974 in Normandy, France, has lived and worked in Montpellier since 1999. His artistic journey has developed at the intersection of multiple disciplines, from landscape painting and graphic arts to typography, urban culture, and digital practices.
Influenced from an early age by the legacy of Impressionism, plein-air painting, and a close connection with nature, he developed a particular sensitivity to landscape, light, and space. His approach gradually expanded through his experience with printing, illustration, and graffiti, giving rise to a hybrid practice in which traditional and contemporary techniques converge.
This diversity has shaped his vision of art as a continuous passage between the inner and outer worlds. Beyond purely aesthetic concerns, creation becomes a way of exploring perception, experience, and what FA7 more broadly describes as an “art of living.”
His experience in art therapy and workshop facilitation further deepened his interest in creative processes, experimentation, and the immediacy of the moment. Gesture consequently plays a central role in his practice. At times, it becomes performance, as painting moves beyond the studio to enter the stage, engaging with dance, video, and music within immersive environments.
Since 2008, FA7 has developed a distinctive artistic process centred on light and the transformation of matter. Working directly on backlit glass panels, he brings together water, pigments, sand, and acrylic materials, exploring their varying densities, viscosities, and degrees of transparency.
As light passes through these materials, abstract landscapes emerge, sometimes evoking mineral formations or cosmic depths. Elsewhere, the raw trace of the artist’s tools remains deliberately visible, preserving the immediacy and energy of the gesture. FA7 guides the process and defines its parameters without attempting to control its outcome entirely.
This element of unpredictability is fundamental to his practice: the resulting compositions are inherently ephemeral. FA7 intervenes, observes the evolving materials, and ultimately uses photography to capture the precise moment at which the composition reaches its point of balance.
Photography thus becomes a natural extension of the painterly gesture. Captured in high definition and subsequently produced on aluminium, the final image preserves an artwork that, only moments earlier, existed solely through the temporary convergence of light, movement, and matter.
At the intersection of painting, photography, and performance, FA7 has developed a practice in which ephemerality is not a limitation but a language in its own right. His works capture fleeting states of matter, giving lasting form to what would otherwise be destined to disappear.
