Robin LAFFARGUE
Born in 1989 in Toulouse, Robin Laffargue is a self-taught painter whose career, deeply linked to personal experience, reflects a bubbling energy channeled through creation. An eclectic and hyperactive child, art channeled his energy, and he discovered an outlet and a means of concentration in drawing at a very early age. Pencil in hand, he never stopped tracing, coloring, and experimenting. This instinctive gesture, which became a daily occurrence, gradually transformed into a full-fledged artistic approach.
Robin’s work stands at the crossroads of Raw Art, Pop Art, and Neo-Expressionism, often tinged with the raw energy of street art. His paintings are intense, layered, and unapologetically human. Drawing inspiration from artists like Jean-Michel Basquiat, Francis Bacon, Jean Dubuffet, and Egon Schiele, he explores themes of identity, conflict, inequality, and the fragility of our shared existence. Science, philosophy, sociology, and ethology all feed into his reflection on the human experience.
His creative process is grounded in experimentation and instinct. Laffargue uses a mixed-media approach, combining acrylics, oils, pastels, Indian ink, collage, and epoxy resin – all on a single canvas. His relationship with materials is intuitive: “I use whatever I can get my hands on. I started with charcoal, but now I can’t imagine working without color.”
Known for his work on the humanoid head – a recurring motif that’s both haunting and expressive. Each one is accompanied by a short video shared online, where Robin blends storytelling, imagery, and music. This multimedia approach allows him to turn each painting into an experience, blurring the line between visual art and performance.
Engagement with his audience is central to his practice. Through his participatory project Mic Mac, he invites his online community to respond to open-ended questions that then shape the content of his artworks. For his piece Human Micmac, for example, followers contributed ideas about the most influential people, events, and inventions in human history – resulting in a collective, thought-provoking visual collage.
Robin Laffargue has exhibited in galleries across southern France and at major contemporary art fairs such as Art3F. His work, vibrant and unfiltered, challenges viewers to look deeper – not just at the canvas, but at themselves and the world they inhabit. Through bold imagery and layered symbolism, he continues to build a body of work that is as emotional as it is intellectual, as impulsive as it is deliberate.
